The numerous hills north of Killala afford magnificent views over the surrounding landscape.  One of the best vantage points is the hill behind the ruins of the eighteenth-century Castlelackan where an obelisk-topped eye-catcher stands guard overlooking Killala Bay.  Colloquially known as “The Gazebo”, the eye-catcher was erected in 1794 for Sir Roger Palmer (d. 1819), second Baronet. The mountainous landscape of County Donegal can be seen on a clear day while Ben Bulben and Knocknarea in County Sligo are also visible from “The Gazebo”.
