The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage has partnered with Galway City Council to create Wonder Wander walking trails. The Wonder Wander walking trails have been developed in collaboration with the local communities. In addition to well-known public buildings, each trail shines a light on some of the lesser known architectural details and the stories that are associated with these unique places.
The Wonder Wander for the City Core begins at Spanish Arch and winds a path through centuries of architecture and history. It takes in the narrow laneways notorious for smuggling and illicit trade in the 1700s, local landmarks of nineteenth-century retail splendour, and twentieth-century temples of art, culture and entertainment. The trail ends in Flood Street where the eagle-eyed will spot a sea monster, one of the many examples in the city of medieval stonework reused in later buildings, an early form of architectural salvage for which Galway is particularly well known!
