Detached multiple-bay opera house built 1963-5 and refronted 2000 with atrium to east elevation. Flat roof with fly tower. Split concrete block walls with limestone ashlar cladding to atrium.
Cork Opera House was designed by Michael Scott (1905-89) and occupies the site of an earlier opera house variously known as "The Athenaeum" (1855), "The Munster Hall" (1875) or "The Opera House" (1877), which was destroyed by accidental fire (12th December 1955). Although altered in 2000, the Scott façade giving way to an atrium, the galleried auditorium and stage house survive largely intact.
