Description

Large demesne on an elevated site with a Tudor Revival house, built in 1827, for the Odell Family, set in extensive parkland with woodland and shelterbelts; courtyard of outbuildings to the west of the house; gate lodge to the south with fine entrance gates; original approach across parkland adjusted westwards to pass through a rock cutting, c.1888. In 1904 the Sisters of the Bon Sauveur established a convent and private psychiatric hospital at the site, adding a church in a similar style to the house to the east, since then the facilities have been extended to create a campus for adults with intellectual disabilities and is now run by a limited company.

Principal Building

1:Seven-bay two- and three-storey Tudor Revival House of local red sandstone, built 1827 for John Odell, with a single bay turreted centrepiece. Extensive return to the rear with quadrangle of outbuildings enclosing a central garden.

Ornamental Garden

9:Getty aerial photograph,1956, shows the gardens laid out in formal beds with fountain to the front, still extant, and terraced lawn to south-west, now partly-occupied by modern tennis court;surrounded by mature woodland, gazebos to the north and west of main house and a saw-tooth hedge to north-east boundary, now partly intact.

Plant Collection

Open woodland of oak, beech, ash and spruce; impressive specimens possibly contemporaneous with main house; large monkey puzzle to north of terrace.

14:Main access, pre-1943, from south-east, subsequently altered and moved to west with section cut through rock, pre-1906; access from north, pre-1843, gone by c.2000.

Entrance from north, pre-1843, evident on maps up to 1929 but now longer extant.
