Description

Impressive landscape park, with romantic castellated mansion overlooking the River Blackwater to the east, built for John Kiely in 1830 by G.R. Pain, on a site that included the ruins of Desmond castle. Significant woodland, pre-1842, remains to the north and south of the house. Approaches to the house were designed to take in the views of the river as one emerged from the woodland; an avenue from the west leads to the woodland south of the house which featured tracks along which were set an aviary and a summer house, both now gone, and two gate lodges, one of which is a cottage orné. The farmyard and walled garden are located to the west of the house. Extensive conservation was undertaken at the property in c.2003.
