Description

Terraced two-bay three-storey former house, built c. 1870, with vacant retail outlet to ground floor. Now disused. Pitched slate roof with red brick chimneystack, cast-iron rainwater goods and red brick parapet with granite coping. Red brick Flemish bond walls with vitrified brick stringcourses. Segmental-headed openings to upper floors, having stepped brick reveals, chamfered granite flush sills, and alternating vitrified and red brick voussoirs. Recent full-width shopfront to ground floor.

Appraisal

Though altered at ground floor level with the insertion of a recent full-width shopfront across two properties, this building is an integral part of the historic streetscape. Its form and materials are in keeping with the neighbouring buildings, though its slightly smaller scale makes it eye-catching. The stepped brick detailing, contrasting red and black brick and grey ashlar detailing, and segmental-headed openings are typical features of its time. Westland Row was opened in 1773 and widened in the early 1790s, though much of the historic building fabric dates to the following century.
