Terrace of three two-bay two-storey houses, built c.1880. Hipped roof, hidden behind raised parapet having cut granite capping with yellow brick corbels, with red brick chimneystacks. Red brick walls laid in Flemish bond to front (south) elevation, rendered walls to east and west elevations. Segmental-headed window openings having cut granite sills and yellow brick voussoirs. Two-over-two timber sash windows and replacement timber and uPVC windows. Round-headed door openings having yellow brick voussoirs, timber panelled doors with painted timber cornices and plain fanlights. Painted metal pedestrian gate adjoining number 3 having pointed arch brick surround with yellow brick voussoirs, sawtooth cornice and cut granite capping.
This terrace retains much of its early form and character, and fabric including door surrounds and timber sash windows. The contrasting yellow brick adds decorative interest to the front elevation. Housing in Brainboro Terrace was developed in the late nineteenth century at the edge of the city in an area that had been largely devoted to manufacturing. Houses were developed in groups of as few as two or three by small developers, with the sale of one group being used to finance the construction of the next, leading to a pleasing variation of house types within a similar style. The new residential streets provided housing for tradespeople and skilled workers of the city.
