Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, installed c.1905, having raised insignia of E.R. VII, crown motif over letter slot and moulded frame. Maker's mark 'W. T. ALLEN & CO LONDON'. Set in boundary wall of Saint Patrick's House, convent of the Little Sisters of the Poor.
This attractive piece of street furniture demonstrates the high quality of mass-produced cast-iron work in the early years of the twentieth century. The finely detailed insignia dates the box to the reign of Edward VII, and provides decorative as well as contextual interest. Following Independence, existing post boxes were simply repainted rather than replaced, a subtle act of cultural appropriation. The recognisable form and simple detailing demonstrate the artistic qualities of mass production at the time of its casting. It continues to fulfil its original function and is testament to the robust quality of manufacture. Early twentieth century post boxes such as this are becoming increasingly rare in Ireland.
