Gateway, erected c.1800, comprising square-profile cut limestone piers with carved base and capping, forming pair of vehicular entrances, each with double-leaf cast-iron gates. Matching lower piers to each side forming pedestrian entrances, each having matching pedestrian gate. Wheel-guards to front. Some limestone recently replaced. Limestone setts to approach.
These finely-tooled gate piers provide a focal point in the streetscape, with decorative carving to the capping and base which is of technical as well as artistic interest, highlighting the skill and craftsmanship of stone masons at the time of their construction. Their symmetrical arrangement enhances the imposing, stolid appearance of the entrance, which served as an introduction to the Royal Hospital.
