Appraisal

The walls surrounding the Royal Barracks served an important function in protecting the security of the complex, as well as providing an impression of power and status. Constructed in calp limestone, like most of the buildings within the barracks, a high degree of skill and craftsmanship is apparent, adding contextual and aesthetic interest to the streetscape of Arbour Hill. The well-composed gateway acts as a rear entrance to the complex, and is noticeably more refined in design and form than its counterparts to the front, as is its modest attached gate-lodge.
