Description

Cast-iron and granite entrance, erected c.1830, now disused. Two pairs of cast-iron gates with spear-head finials hung on cast-iron posts having pine-cone finials and scrolled brackets. Both entrances flanked by matching railings and large granite ashlar piers with cornice and capstones. Matching cast-iron railings between both entrances on low granite ashlar plinth wall with coping. Set of granite steps spanning entrance screen, opening onto tarmac public road with gradient resulting in two steps to north end and five steps to south.

Appraisal

Built as the entrance to Dublin Zoo, this entrance screen is no longer in use but has been retained in good condition. The robust and restrained detailing exhibits quality ironwork and stonework skills and forms an intrinsic part of a significant collection of nineteenth-century structures within Dublin Zoo and Phoenix Park.
