Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, erected c.1890, with royal monogram of Queen Victoria and lettering 'POST OFFICE' in raised lettering on flap to aperture. Maker's mark to base of box. Set into round-plan rubble stone pier. Standing at a crossroads opposite national school.
This post box is an example of the work of the London foundry of W. T. Allen & Co. The V R monogram and lettering enlivens the otherwise functional design. The royal cipher acts as a reminder of Ireland's colonial past. While providing an invaluable service to the local community the letter box displays both local and historic associations and adds interest to this rural crossroads. The stone pier is similar in character to many gate piers in the locality.
