Cast-iron wall-mounted post box, manufactured c.1905, set in red brick square-plan gate pier with pointed rendered cap. Rectangular moulded frame with single hooded aperture. Crown and monogram of King Edward VII to top, 'Post Office' to letter slot hood, and foundry name under side-hung door. Set on rural country road.
This post box is an example of mass-produced cast-iron work, with raised royal insignia enhancing the modest design of the piece. These insignia are of historical interest as they constitute a physical reminder of Ireland's imperial past. Many pre-Independence post boxes were simply repainted green. Those with the insignia of Edward VII being quite rare given the shortness of his reign. This post-box may have been relocated to this site in the mid- to late twentieth century, as it is not indicated on the 1908 Ordnance Survey map. Located on a rural country road, this post box is still in regular use and remains a socially important piece of the local street furniture.
