Seven-span railway viaduct, built c.1925, replacing earlier lattice girder bridge on braced metal trestles. Carriageway and abutments to either end now removed. Supporting columns extant, comprising paired riveted metal cylinders filled with concrete, metal casing removed from most columns. Reinforced concrete beam atop pair of columns to west.
Although only the piers now survive this former viaduct continues to be a prominent feature in the landscape. The Dundalk and Enniskillen Railway opened here in 1858, and was later subsumed into the Great Northern Railway. This bridge replaced an earlier lattice girder bridge, signifying the ongoing technological development of the railway with the use of materials such as concrete. The railway network opened up the country both economically and socially, facilitating increased interaction and movement of people in addition to providing a conduit for goods.
