Entrance gates to Hilton Park, erected 1868, comprising double-leaf cast-iron vehicular gate with fleur-de-lys finials, flanked by square-plan panelled cast-iron piers on plinths, surmounted by crown and falcon ornaments. Matching single-leaf cast-iron pedestrian gates to each side, flanked by matching outer piers having mace-head ornaments. Gateway set within roughly coursed rubble stone wall with tooled stone copings and quoins.
This formal entrance to Hilton Park provides an important and decorative element on the landscape, marking the transition from the public road to the private realm of the demesne. The simple panelled gate piers epitomize aesthetic ideals from the nineteenth century, whist the falcon and crown motif atop the well-executed piers add symbolic as well as decorative interest, the falcon traditionally representing leadership and wisdom. The gates are known as "The Green Gates".
