Freestanding Gothic Revival-style Church of Ireland Church, dated 1844, comprising three-bay nave, shallow lower single-bay chancel flanked by single-bay porch and vestry each projecting slightly beyond gable of chancel, and single-bay porch to south-west elevation. Pitched slate roof, having dressed stone copings and kneelers to gables, and cast-iron ridge tiles. Gabled dressed stone bell-cote, with integral chimneystack, to south-west, chimneystack to north-east, and replacement rainwater goods. Snecked squared stone walls having dressed sandstone block-and-start quoins, sill courses and impost courses, shouldered buttresses, and projecting plinth course. Inscribed date plaque over door to front (south-east) elevation of porch. Lancet windows throughout, double-light to nave and triple to chancel, having carved stops, with dressed sandstone chamfered surrounds and sills, string course forming continuous hood-moulding to nave and chancel, and leaded stained-glass windows. Single lancet openings to gables of projections to chancel end, with leaded windows. Pointed-arch door openings to front of main porch and to projections to chancel end, with dressed chamfered sandstone surrounds and hood-mouldings, double-leaf timber battened doors and timber battened over-doors, opening onto dressed stone platforms and steps. Interior has rendered walls, timber king-post truss roof with render cornice. Nave has raised painted dressed sandstone recesses, with dagger motifs to spandrels, and chamfered dressed sandstone sills. Fireplace with identical detailing to vestry. Two rows of timber pews set into timber wainscoting to walls, on raised timber platforms. Timber pulpit and lectern. Moulded render hood-moulding to chancel arch, with moulded stops. Render columns supporting hood-moulding over window openings. Marble baptismal font to front of chancel. Raised timber steps to chancel, timber altar rail and altar table. Dressed stone baptismal font to porch. Ladder to north-west elevation, having protective lean-to corrugated-iron canopy. Set within graveyard with concrete-post boundary fence.
This Gothic Revival-style architectural form of Saint Mary's Church is enhanced by the nature of the chancel and the various projections. The retention of many original features and materials, including leaded windows and well-executed masonry and stone dressings, which provide visual and textural variation, emphasises its intactness. Internally, it retains its original timber fittings and furnishings and a dressed stone font. Serving the Church of Ireland community on both sides of the border, this simple but aesthetically-pleasing church is of social importance in the area.
