Cast-iron post box set in wall, installed c.1905. Rectangular moulded frame with letter aperture having lettering 'Post Office' to latter, and foundry mark to base. Royal insignia of Edward VII. Set in concrete block wall to south-east corner of junction.
This post box is an example of mass-produced cast-iron work. The royal cipher and crown motif are of special interest, constituting a physical reminder of the colonial period in Ireland, this wall box being made during the reign of Edward VII (1901-10). Many pre-Independence post boxes were simply repainted green and retained the royal insignia. Located at a prominent junction north of Moy Otra school house and Saint Mary's Catholic church on what would have been the main Dublin to Derry road, this post box is still in regular use and remains a socially important piece of the local street furniture.
