Description
Single-arch humpback bridge, built c.1820, carrying road over River Blackwater. Segmental arch with gauged tooled sandstone voussoirs and gunnelled soffits. Coursed rubble sandstone to abutment, spandrel and parapet walls. Abutments reinforced in concrete.
Appraisal
The modest appearance of this bridge belies the complexity of its design and execution, its elegant single arch and well-tooled voussoirs a testament to the skill in engineering which was available in the early decades of the nineteenth century.
