Double-arch bridge, built c.1800, carrying road over River Blackwater. Round arches having tooled sandstone voussoirs. V-shaped tooled squared stone cutwaters to each elevation. Central pier and abutments reinforced with concrete. Coursed rubble stone to soffits. Coursed roughly-squared rubble stone to spandrel and abutment walls. Coursed rubble stone to parapets, with squared stone capping.
Well-designed and finely-executed, this bridge is a notable example of high quality engineering and craftsmanship in bridge construction in the early nineteenth century. An aesthetically-pleasing landmark, it is also of social and historic interest, reflecting the growth of the road network and increased possibilities for communication at this time.
