Description

Double-arch road-bridge, built c.1800, carrying road over River Blackwater. Round arches with gauged sandstone voussoirs, V-shaped roughly-dressed sandstone cut-waters to central pier. Snecked masonry to spandrel walls, rebuilt coursed rubble parapet walls having render capping. Gunnelled soffits. Abutments and central pier reinforced with concrete.

Appraisal

This visually-pleasing and well-proportioned bridge retains the original round profile of its arches, which point to its early construction date. High-quality craftsmanship is evident in the execution of the V-shaped cut-waters. The aesthetic appeal of this bridge is recognised in the positioning of a landscaped garden to the north-west and together the group forms a pleasing tableau.
