Single-arch humpback bridge, built c.1860, carrying road over Mountain Water River. Segmental arch with tooled limestone voussoirs. Coursed limestone rubble to spandrel and parapet walls, render copings to parapets. Round-plan piers abutting spandrel walls, flanking arch to each elevation. River bed underneath paved with setts.
This well-executed stone bridge, built at the site of an earlier crossing point, is a picturesque landmark on the river. The paved river bed underneath is a feature which is particularly characteristic of this locality, and the round-profile buttresses mimic round-profile gate piers which are typically found in the region. The fine stonework of the voussoirs provides an interesting contrast to the rubble stone of the parapet and spandrel walls, demonstrating the craftsmanship and skill in stonework in the early nineteenth century. That the bridge remains in use in its present form is testament to the quality of its construction.
