Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box with hinged door, installed c.1875, with banded margin surround, projecting letter slot with raised 'POST OFFICE' insignia, VR royal cipher to upper portion, 'Eagle Range & Foundry, Bernard P. Walker & Co' foundry stamp to bottom portion. Set into random rubble boundary wall at roadside at north edge of Monaghan Town.

Appraisal

This letter box is an attractive item of street furniture that represents nineteenth-century mass-produced cast-iron ware. The royal cipher and banded margins enhance this utilitarian object but also recall a time when Ireland formed part of the British Empire. Despite some damage to the upper section of the box, it is a small but excellently designed example of high-quality mass-produced cast-iron.
