Freestanding lime kiln, built c.1860. Rectangular plan with earth embankment to side and rear for loading crushed limestone into flue. Stepped, coursed rubble stone walls with tooled quoins. Round arch to front (north) elevation, with stone voussoirs and square-headed raking-out hole with brick flat arch. Set beside small rural road, built into hillside.
Lime kilns were once a common feature in the landscape, but a relatively small number survive intact today. This example is an impressive structure of technical and social significance. It was used to provide lime for fertilizer for farms in the local area, and mortar for construction. Although now disused it remains in good condition.
