Description

Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, erected c.1880, having moulded base with fluted shaft, moulded neck with plain spout, fluted domed cap and fluted handle. Finial missing. Bucket stand to base. Located on grass verge, close to former Clogher National School.

Appraisal

This attractive piece of mass-produced cast-iron street furniture has been well maintained and remains an appealing and subtle feature in the local landscape. It is a reminder of the mechanisms installed for the provision of clean water prior to the development of mains water supply and is therefore of technical interest. The hydrant is classical in appearance, with its moulded base and fluted shaft.
