Description

Double-arch road-over-river bridge, built c. 1760. Segmental-headed arches, with narrow rubble voussoirs, random rubble soffit to vault. Random uncoursed rubble stone piers, spandrels and parapets, rough stone coping on edge to parapets. Single lane carriageway over.

Appraisal

A modest small-scale stone bridge that survives as a testament to the quality of materials and craftsmanship used in its construction. A functional structure has been utilised for many generations and is an integral part of the local transport network of Newtowncunningham. The shape of the arch suggests that this particular bridge is quite early, perhaps dating to the mid-eighteenth century or earlier.
