Description

Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, erected c.1890, having fluted shaft on moulded base with moulded neck, handle, and fluted domed cap with acorn finial. Now overgrown. Located at side of hedgerow, next to former schoolhouse and adjacent to roadside.

Appraisal

This intact, elegant item of street furniture is an example of mass-produced cast-iron ware. It has features of artistic interest in the form of the fluted shaft and cap with acorn finial. It is also of interest as a reminder of an era before mains water supply.
