Description

Freestanding carved limestone Celtic cross memorial, erected c.1970, commemorating Ballymanus Sea Mine Disaster. Open-ringed cross atop shaft, both with interlace ornament. Inscribed plinth and base with names of victims. Located on road side and enclosed by sandstone walls with field-stone coping.

Appraisal

This Celtic cross is of artistic and social significance to the locality, having been erected to serve as a reminder to those killed during the Ballymanus Mine Disaster in which nineteen local men were killed when a mine washed ashore and exploded on the beach in 1943 during the Second World War.
