Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, built c.1820. Hipped replacement slate roof. Roughcast render to walls. Bipartite timber lattice casement windows to front elevation, single lattice casement window to side and rear elevations, all with stone sills. Timber sheeted entrance door. Sweeping rubble walls with rendered barrel coping terminating in two pairs of punched stone piers with square-profile base, chamfered shafts, copings, and ball finials. Pair of pedestrian gateways flanking main vehicular entrance with cast-iron gates terminating in spear-tops.
A picturesque gate lodge, forming an integral part of the Fort Frederick estate, sited at its principal entrance. The fine stonework of the gate piers and decorative cast-iron railings indicate to the public road the significance of the demesne within. While the replacement of the original roof and loss of its chimneystack is unfortunate, the lodge retains much of its original character. The lodge and finely crafted gates form an elegant composition and give strong definition to the architectural character of the surrounding area.
