Triple-span semicircular-arched limestone road bridge, built c.1780, over tributary of Lough Sheelin. Uncoursed random rubble spandrels, battered parapets with Scotch copings. Irregular square-cut voussoirs to arch ring. Random rubble barrels, piers, and abutments on recent concrete footings with rubble stone V-cutwaters to upstream elevation. Random rubble wing walls to north-west and south-east.
A robust bridge of rubble stone construction, contrasting with later nineteenth century bridges that are usually constructed with careful cut stone detail. The bridge is typical of bridges funded under the county Grand Jury system in the eighteenth century, characterised by its slight humped deck, irregular cut voussoirs, and uncoursed random masonry. It froms part of hte civil engineering heritage of the county, charting the development of bridge building techniques and the expansion of the Irish road network in this period.
