Double-arch limestone road bridge, built c.1850, over River Erne. Random squared rubble piers and spandrels with narrow course beneath parapet. Coursed squared rubble abutments. Rounded cap to U-cutwaters over projecting chamfered stone course to central abutments and piers. Cut stone voussoirs to segmental arches and rubble stone barrel. Squared rubble stone parapet with hammer dressed coping of large dressed stone blocks.
A finely-executed stonework bridge that has a simple and functional elegance. The fine stonework of the cutwaters and parapets elevates the architectural design of this modestly-scaled bridge. The bridge is an example of the type of bridge constructed by the Board of Works as part of arterial drainge schemes in the nineteenth century, whereby river channels were narrowed and deepened to reduce flooding and improve the quality of agricultural land. The bridge makes an important contribution to the architectural character of its landscape setting.
