Cast-iron post box attached to timber post, manufactured c.1915, having curved top, raised 'Letters Only' lettering above letter slot and raised 'GR' royal cipher and crown motif. Located at a rural crossroad junction.
A post-mounted cast-iron letterbox, of typical modest design, imprinted with the royal GR cipher that identifies the reign of George V (1910-1936) and dates the box to the last years of British rule in Ireland. Originally painted in characteristic red, it was overpainted green after Independence, and serves as a physical record of the secession of the State from the United Kingdom. It is a fine example of the high quality design of mass produced cast-iron in the late nineteenth and first part of the twentieth centuries.
