Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1890, with 'VR' royal cypher. Curved top and 'LETTERS ONLY' in raised lettering above letter slot with display panel over cypher in intertwined letters beneath. Set in rendered masonry gate pier adjacent to rural crossroads.

Appraisal

An attractive example of mass-produced cast-iron ware, the box is located close to a road junction, a common site for post boxes in rural areas. Originally painted red, the modest design of the box is enhanced by the decorative quality of the royal cypher of Queen Victoria, which is an interesting reminder of the period when Ireland formed part of the United Kingdom.
