Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1905. Moulded perimeter frame with 'ER VII' around crown as royal insignia of Edward VII. Raised lettering reading ‘POST OFFICE' to flap over raised moulded slot. Door with display panel and lock below. Manufacturer's imprint in raised letters below reading 'W. T. ALLEN & Co. LONDON'. Set in gable end of historic rubble stone outbuilding at a crossroads.
An early twentieth-century letter box of that is a fine example of the high quality design and casting of mass produced ironwork at the time. The insignia and crown are reminders of British rule in Ireland in the Edwardian period, and are motifs that are found on contemporary post boxes in Britain. This post box has played an important part in the social fabric of the local community for more than one hundred years.
