Description

Wrought-iron suspension footbridge over river, erected c. 1840. Wrought- and cast-iron suspension gantries on rubble masonry abutments to east and west banks, steel suspension cables, wrought-iron deck cradles, timber plank decking. Spans Arrow Unshin River to south of Markree Castle.

Appraisal

This attractive and unusual suspension footbridge displays a high level of technical skill and craftsmanship in its construction. As a mainly ornamental feature it is of considerable artistic interest and would have provided a romantic eye-catcher for boating parties departing from or returning to the nearby boathouse or landing stage at the foot of the Castle gardens.
