Appraisal

A house representing an important component of the mid nineteenth-century domestic built heritage of the environs of Easky with the architectural value of the composition, one erected by Peter Hale (d. 1864) on a site obtained (1855) through the Encumbered Estates Court, confirmed by such attributes as the compact plan form centred on an expressed breakfront; the multipartite glazing patterns; the silver-grey limestone dressings demonstrating good quality workmanship; and the decorative timber work embellishing a high pitched roof. A prolonged period of neglect notwithstanding, the form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior, thus upholding the character or integrity of the composition. Furthermore, a walled garden (extant 1910); and a nearby gate lodge (extant 1910), all continue to contribute positively to the group and setting values of an estate having historic connections with the Hale family including James C. Hale (1820-75) 'late of Templeview Dromore West County Sligo' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1875, 282); and James Howley Hale (1868-1919). NOTE: Occupied (1901) by Lawrence Moloney (----), 'Steward' (NA 1901); and (1911) by John Quinn (----), 'Steward' (NA 1911).
