Detached underground coal bunkers, built c. 1840. Long narrow below-ground tunnel extending east-west at roadside, three openings to south side stepping uphill, entrance to east end. Rubble stone segmental vaulted roof. Rubble stone walling. Square-headed openings to road, tooled limestone dressings, rebated jambs. Single segmental-headed opening to east, tooled limestone rebated jambs and voussoirs. Stable yard to east.
The quality of the construction of these coal bunkers, particularly of stone dressings to openings, and its location adjacent to a main drive, suggest its importance to the functioning of the estate. It is believed that the coal was brought to the Lissadell estate by ship which was then beached and transferred from ship to shore by means of pony and cart and then drawn from these coal bunkers to the various locations where required on the estate.
