Description

Four-span limestone road-over-river bridge, built c. 1840. Two arches built up. Uncoursed rubble walling rising uninterrupted to parapet, canted ashlar parapet copings. Semi-circular arches with roughly-cut tooled voussoirs, squared rubble triangular cutwaters to both sides rising to parapet, triangular concrete cappings. Bitmac twin carriageway, narrow grass verges. Spans south-west to north-east over Grange River. In isolated rural location at foot of Ben Bulben.

Appraisal

This modest bridge utilises local stone in its construction. It is unusual for having cutwaters rising to parapet level, presumably to deal with the river in full spate.
