Description

Detached eight-bay former rendered church hall, built 1928. Asymmetric front north-facing front elevation with projecting five-bay central section, 'L'-shaped on plan with return at south-west. No longer in use. Flat roof behind castellated parapet, cast-iron rainwater goods with uPVC replacement section to east. Unpainted ruled-and-lined rendered walls, straight channelled quoins, moulded cornice and architrave below parapet. Square-headed window openings, unpainted masonry sills, uPVC windows c. 1980, windows to central section with metal mesh grilles. Round-headed door opening, rendered hood-moulding over recessed doorway, hardwood vertically-sheeted double doors. Date plaque above door reads 'ST. JOHN'S CHURCH HALL AD 1928'. Doorway accessed by concrete steps from John Street. Sited on rising ground, unpainted smooth-rendered boundary retaining wall topped with wrought-iron railings to John Street, castellated rubble stone boundary wall to east with pass gate giving to Church of Ireland Cathedral.

Appraisal

Although no longer in use as a church hall, this handsome little building continues to make a valuable contribution to the streetscape. Very much a building of the 1920s, it nevertheless sits comfortably with its ecclesiastical neighbours.
