Description

Detached cruciform penal chapel, built c.1750, with open niches to arms and stone cross to roof. No longer in use. Random coursed limestone walls and corbelled roofs. Altar located in each pointed-arched niche. Located on raised mound in a field enclosed by a random coursed limestone wall accessed through a pointed-arched entrance.

Appraisal

Located on an elevated site, The Four Altar is a prominent landmark. It is a site of historical and religious significance within the area. Built with locally-sourced materials it follows old construction techniques. The Four Altars stands as a testimony to the Roman Catholic community of the area during penal times in Ireland.
