Description

Freestanding cylindrical cast-iron pillar box, erected c.1885, with moulded neck and domed cap with fluted edge. Royal insignia of Victoria to door and maker's name to base, set on road side.

Appraisal

This cast-iron pillar box, made during the reign of Queen Victoria, is an important feature in the social and urban fabric of the town. The high-relief casting of the lettering is well executed. The name of the maker is clearly seen on the base, 'A. HANDYSIDE & CO LTD. DERBY & LONDON'. Handyside of Derby were the first iron foundry to produce these cylindrical post boxes.
