Description

Gateway, extant 1838, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of limestone ashlar piers on chamfered plinths having "Cavetto"-detailed cornices below shallow pyramidal capping supporting spear head-detailed cast-iron double gates with limestone ashlar outer piers on benchmark-inscribed chamfered plinths having "Cavetto"-detailed cornices below shallow pyramidal capping. Now disused. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Annefield House.

Appraisal

A gateway making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan setting at the entrance on to the grounds of the Annefield House estate: meanwhile, a discreet benchmark remains of additional interest for the connections with cartography and the preparation of maps by the Ordnance Survey (established 1824).
