Description

Freestanding single-bay single-stage gable-fronted icehouse, dated 1810, on a rectangular plan. Now disused. Turf-covered pitched (gable-fronted) roof. Coursed rubble limestone walls with hammered limestone flush quoins to corners. Square-headed door opening with inscribed cut-limestone threshold ("1810"), and dragged cut-limestone monolithic surround with no fittings surviving. Interior including vaulted ice store on a circular plan with red brick English bond walls. Set in mound in unkempt grounds shared with Castlemacgarrett.

Appraisal

An icehouse carrying the initials of Dominick Geoffrey Browne (1755-1826) contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Castlemacgarrett estate.
