Appraisal

A vaulted basement surviving as an interesting relic of an early nineteenth-century country house 'on the dull side…with wide stone pilaster-strips and a semi-circular large-scale Doric porch' (Craig and Garner 1976, 37). Furthermore, a neglected farmyard complex (see 31311019); a walled garden (see 31311020); and a nearby gateway (see 31311021), all continue to contribute positively to the group and setting values of a fragmented estate having historic connections with the Gildea family including James Knox Gildea JP (1804-70), one-time High Sheriff of County Mayo (fl. 1835; Burke 1912, 266); and Arthur Knox Gildea JP DL (1858-1923), one-time High Sheriff of County Mayo (fl. 1891; NA 1911).
