Detached eight-bay single-storey national school, dated 1894; opened 1895; extant 1901, on a symmetrical plan. Renovated, 1935. Closed, 1968. Undergoing renovation, 2011, to accommodate proposed alternative use. Replacement pitched slate roof on collared timber construction with clay or terracotta ridge tiles centred on rendered chimney stacks having stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, concrete coping to gables, and plastic rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on slightly overhanging timber boarded exposed timber rafters. Rendered, ruled and lined walls centred on drag edged rusticated cut-limestone date stone ("1894"; "1935"). Pair of square-headed central door openings with concealed dressings framing replacement glazed timber boarded doors. Square-headed flanking window openings with concrete sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows with replacement two-over-two timber sash windows to rear (north) elevation. Set in unkempt grounds with rendered piers to perimeter having truncated pyramidal capping.
A national school representing an integral component of the late nineteenth-century architectural heritage of south County Mayo. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original or sympathetically replicated fabric, thereby upholding the character or integrity of a national school making a pleasing visual statement in a rural street scene.
