Handball alley, dated 1914, on a rectangular plan with cement rendered mass concrete boundary wall to perimeter. Restored, 2008. Road fronted on a corner site.
A handball alley representing an integral component of the early twentieth-century built heritage of County Mayo. NOTE: The handball alley was built on a site donated by Patrick Lyons of Brackloon North and was the setting for sporting activity for much of the twentieth century but had fallen into advanced disrepair by the turn of the twenty-first century. A committee including Kevin Devaney, Dom Murphy, Tom Quinn, Noel Sloyan and Raymond Sloyan set about its rehabilitation, the materials sponsored by local suppliers and the repair works carried out by volunteers, and the completed restoration was marked by a Mass (4th October 2008) and the unveiling of a plaque inscribed: "Brackloon/Ball Alley/1914-2008/This plaque is erected to commemorate/the deceased members of our community/who built this ball alley/and who played here in the past/Ar Dheis Dé Go Raibh A n-Anamacha Dílse/We acknowledge with gratitude all who/made this restoration possible/OCTOBER 2008".
