Description

Detached three-bay (two-bay deep) two-storey house with dormer attic, post-1920, on a symmetrical plan. Refenestrated, 2009. Hipped slate roof with roll moulded terracotta ridge tiles, rendered, ruled and lined chimney stacks on axis with ridge having corbelled stepped stringcourses below capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta octagonal pots, rooflights to rear (south) pitch, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves having "Cavetto"-detailed consoles. Gritdashed roughcast walls on rendered plinth with rusticated rendered piers to corners. Hipped segmental-headed central door opening with threshold, and rendered surround with panelled pilasters centred on keystone framing timber panelled door having sidelights on panelled risers below fanlight. Square-headed window openings with concrete sills, and moulded rendered surrounds framing replacement uPVC casement windows replacing one-over-one timber sash windows. Set back from line of street in landscaped grounds with hedge boundary to perimeter centred on wrought iron gate.

Appraisal

A house representing an integral component of the twentieth-century domestic built heritage of Aghamore with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact plan form centred on a Classically-detailed doorcase; and the very slight diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a feint graduated visual impression with the principal "apartments" defined by polygonal bay windows: however, the recent (2009) introduction of replacement fittings to most of the openings has not had a beneficial impact on the character or integrity of a house making a pleasing visual statement in a rural village street scene.
