Appraisal

A monument 'ERECTED IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE GALLANT FRENCH SOLDIERS WHO DIED FIGHTING FOR THE FREEDOM OF IRELAND ON THE 27TH AUGUST 1798'. NOTE: Organised by a committee led by James Daly (1838-1911) and Patrick William Nally (1856-91) of Balla (cf. 31309018), the monument not only 'anticipated 1798 centennial commemorations by more than two decades', but also '[in] taking the form of a cross...preceded the popularity of Celtic crosses as Ninety-Eight centennial monuments first introduced in 1898' (Beiner 2007, 274-5).
