Description

Limestone lock, built c.1780, on short canalised waterway, now disused. Coursed tooled cut limestone walls, with rebate for lock gates, and with curved ends to south. Lock gates missing. Rubble stone revetments to waterway.

Appraisal

This is an interesting visual reminder of the importance of inland navigation, fishing and seaweed harvesting in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Although the lock gates are no longer extant, the completeness of the masonry is testament to the skills involved in the design and construction. The carefully cut and tooled lock contrasts pleasingly with the roughness of the rubble stone revetments to the embankments.
