Description

Freestanding cast-iron "pillar box" post box, extant 1911.  Set back from line of road.

Appraisal

A "pillar box" post box representing an interesting example of mass-produced cast-iron work making a pleasing visual statement in a rural setting.  NOTE: The post box carries the signature of A. Handyside and Company of Derby and London who produced their first post box in 1853 and who secured the contract for post boxes throughout Great Britain and Ireland in 1879.  The company ceased trading in 1911.  The post box originally carried the "VR [Victoria Regina]" cipher of Queen Victoria (1819-1901; r. 1837-1901) or the "ER [Edwardus Rex] VII" royal cipher of King Edward VII (1841-1910; r. 1901-10).  The post box, surplus to requirements in its original urban setting, is a comparatively recent addition to the historic built environment of Rosscahill.
