Limestone milestone, erected c.1850, with carved inscription 'To Galway […] Miles Tuam 7, Dunmore 15, Castlerea […], Moylough 9, Athenry 7, Erected by John Bodkin'. Fan scroll carving to top corners with diamond relief band frame. Carved hand details and initials 'C.B.' Set against rendered boundary wall of property at road junction.
This very attractive carved limestone artefact is an interesting part of the roadscape at Annagh and is a reminder of the age of coaching in Ireland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The stone has intricate carving details showing fine craftsmanship adding artistic interest. It also has associations with John Bodkin, of the prominent and wealthy Bodkin family, one of the 'Tribes of Galway' who were granted Annagh and other lands in the Barony of Clare, Co. Galway in the late seventeenth century.
